TRANSLUCENCE

Contemporary chair handcrafted from ebonised English ash with handwoven stainless steel wire seat and backrest.

Handcrafted from ebonised English ash, this contemporary chair was designed to appear visually lightweight while maintaining strength and structural rigidity. The slender timber frame supports a handwoven seat and back formed from over 500 metres of fine stainless steel wire, creating a surface that catches and reflects light as though suspended within the structure.

The woven stainless steel introduces a sense of transparency and movement, contrasting with the darkened ash frame and giving the chair a floating visual quality. Every timber component is individually shaped and blended together by hand to soften the transitions between joints and create a continuous flowing form.

The polished stainless steel accent components are removable, allowing the woven seat and back to be repaired or rewoven in the future, supporting the longevity and maintainability of the piece.  The contrast between the tactile warmth of the timber and the reflective woven metal reflects an ongoing interest in balancing natural materials with engineered detailing.

Designed as both functional seating and sculptural furniture, the chair combines traditional craftsmanship with contemporary materials and construction techniques.

Designed and made in the UK using sustainably sourced English hardwoods.

Hand-carved wood texture sample in scorched English ash, featuring flowing organic contours and enhanced grain detail.
