FLAME LAMP

English Ash, 2 metres

The lattice of carved and hand finished openings appear organic and free, yet each are in the sequence of a Fibonacci spiral (found in pinecones and seashells).
Formed in the shape of a flame, the piece draws attention to the unnecessary felling of ash trees caused by ash dieback. Both a quiet protest and a celebration of the material, giving new purpose to timber that might otherwise be discarded.

The 440mm helical glass LED filament bulb at the base projects intricate patterns on the surrounding walls. By day the piece is designed to be a tactile sculpture, by night a luminous focal point, blurring the boundary between lighting and art.
